4 A.M.

At 4 A.M. here in the dark
the mouse jumps on his wheel
and starts running and running and running
squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky
and I cannot sleep

During the day it's okay
for him to play this way
just running and running and running
squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky
and I find him amusing

But after awhile
and many a mile
of the running and running and running
squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky
and it grates my nerves

If I took out the wheel
it would be an ordeal
no more running and running and running
squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky
and I’d be at peace

But it wouldn’t last
and he’d scurry about fast
looking for his running and running and running
squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky
and I’d go insane

(Note: I don't have a pet mouse.  It's a metaphore for my over-active brain)

  1. I had a hamster named "Ainge" (he looked like Danny Ainge the basketball player--seriously, he did). He would bite at the metal gate if the wheel got stuck. One way or another, they let you know. I just wish I had that exercise commitment.

  2. The poor thing!

A pet is for life, not just 4am!

  3. Oh my brain is so like this! I absolutely get it. Love how the repetition of the word squeaky here makes me feel annoyance!

  4. My brain was TOTALLY doing this last night! Thankfully, I managed to force it to sleep for about 5 hours with the help of a Soma I needed to relax the muscles that were pissed at me for sitting in strange positions using the laptop all day. :)

  5. My brain does that, too--yes, at 4 am--when I'm trying so desperately to go back to sleep. Nice metaphor!

  8. If only one could hook it up and power something besides insomnia...

  9. Last night my mind was running like this, which makes for a tired and draggy day. Sometimes it's better when I don't fight it and get up and write instead.

  10. I have a mouse like that in my head. His running-running-running powers the creative generator. I miss the sleep, but I'd miss the creative power even more.

Love your little mouse. He serves you well.

  13. Well, I would have loved to pet a mouse or hampster- I have a thing for frogs too..!

But this happens with me with words! The moment I call it a day; like haunted souls they come flying by tapping at my mind's door. I do feel possessed! Now it happens the moment I am idle- as in not blogging or doing nothing..like waiting for tea- water to prepare..

    squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky-squeaky!

    Hugs xx
