Wednesday Wickedness: Cher

Hi and welcome to Wednesday Wickedness . We are like other memes in that we will ask you ten questions each and every Wednesday. But our little "twist" is that each week we will pick a famous person and pick ten of their quotes. Each of our questions will be based on the quotes. Got it? Great! Let's begin this week's meme!

Today we picked Cher. Here's Wednesday Wickedness !

1. “A girl can wait for the right man to come along but in the meantime that still doesn't mean she can't have a wonderful time with all the wrong ones.”

Have you ever had a relationship that you knew was wrong, but had fun anyway?

Not with a person, but there was a time when I was a bit too involved in my relationship with alcohol and it caused me problems.  I have since put alcohol in its place and we’ve reached a mutual understanding.  (We’re just friends now)

2. “Hate crimes are the scariest thing in the world because these people really believe what they're doing is right.”

What group of people committing hate crimes in your country scares you the most and why?

Probably the extremist religious leaders who point to the Bible to justify their actions.  It’s like their ‘get out of jail free’ card and they have no qualms about hurting people, physically or otherwise.

3. “Husbands are like fires - they go out when they're left unattended.”

How much effort do you feel a good relationship requires?”

Well, it varies from couple to couple, person to person. The important thing is that both parties are compatible and give their partner as much - or as little - attention as they need/want. And it’s a good idea to go overboard every once in awhile, just so things don’t get stale.

4. “I won't be able to do what I'm doing forever. There aren't that many scripts floating around for fifty-year-old chicks.”

Why are there roles for men till they get very old, yet very few roles are written for older women?

Simple:  Most people (men AND women) prefer seeing younger women, regardless of what they may say to the contrary.

But don't give up, Cher... Jessica Tandy won an Oscar (for “Driving Miss Daisy”) at age 80, and Dame Judy Dench is just dynamite as 007’s boss, M.

5. “I've always taken risks, and never worried what the world might really think of me.”

Does what other people think effect what you do?

Usually only those people who are close to me. I don’t care much what strangers think about what I do or don’t do.

(Although it’s always nice to get an unsolicited compliment)

6. “If you really want something you can figure out how to make it happen.” Do you agree with Cher?

In general, yes (the thing that stops most people is just themselves), but there’s usually a limit to how far you’re willing to go for something.

Given Cher’s wealth, I’m sure she gets most things she wants. Other people’s lack of morals allows them to pursue whatever they want, regardless of how they get it or whom they step on.

But most of us have limited time and income to invest in purely self-rewarding pursuits, plus enough moral character to keep us from throwing everything aside to chase such frivolities.

(I’m not talking about chasing your dreams - everybody should do that, just not at the expense of all else!)

7. “To me marriage is for five or ten years.”

In your experience, can a marriage last forever?

Sure!  My parents have been married over 45 years, and both sets of my grandparents were married forever.  I’ve got almost 16 years in so far - I can’t imagine being without my wife the rest of my life.

(I think Cher was just retro-fitting her opinion to her history)

8. “Until you're ready to look foolish, you'll never have the possibility of being great.”

When was the last that you felt foolish?

I don’t know about the very last time, but I fdo eel foolish on occasion.  I don’t worry about it too much though, because everybody’s human - and I’ve seen far more foolishness than I’ve ever committed.

9. “Words are like weapons; they wound sometimes.”

What types of things have people said have really hurt you?

It bugs me a bit when my wife and/or son tell me I’m talking something TO DEATH.  I think it’s usually that they’re just TIRED of listening - even though I have more relative points to make - and I just KNOW they don’t really understand what I’m meaning to say - and if they’d ONLY keep an open mind they’d come to realize that there’s MUCH more to it than they currently understand – but they think they have MORE IMPORTANT things to do – even though I know they’re just stonewalling me – and if they only LISTEN, then they would see that…

10. “It's not necessary, in order to be a complete person, that I have a man. It's not the end-all, be-all of my life.”

Do you need to be in a relationship to feel whole?

I don’t believe so, but I know that I’m happy I’m in one.  I think much of the pressure people feel about ‘needing’ to be with someone is social - wanting to fit society’s definition of ‘normal’ – but that doesn’t make it a legitimate need.

There are plenty of people who happily choose to remain single.
(I’m reminded of the old one-liner: “Are you married or happy?”)

  2. I really like your answer to #4 as I also agree Jessica Tandy was one of the most beautiful women that every woman can admire and every man can appreciate. And good for you about lessening the grips of alcohol, I know it takes incredible strength to do that :) Have a wicked one...

  4. Loved all your answers.
To build a strong relation one needs to have trust, love, respect and loyality for the partner. Without these things it won't work.

  6. You do have a point on "Jessica Tandy won an Oscar (for “Driving Miss Daisy”) at age 80, and Dame Judy Dench is just dynamite as 007’s boss, M." Although I fear they are the exceptions. Dench is great. I still miss Bernard Lee (The original M) Great job...

  7. it is a good idea to "go overboard" every once in a while. I always enjoy my visits to Bubba Land and find myself nodding in agreement to most of your answers.

Have a great rest of the week, Eric!

    PS--You have a nice smile. :-)
