Summertime Memories

The 4th of July and national pride
Is on parade once again

A marching band playing Sousa songs

The military mothball brigade
Walks slowly by and waves

An ever-decreasing number

Motionless hot summer air
Tree-top high cicadas drone

Lemonade stands and trips to the beach

Sweat and suntan lotion
And spilled sticky treats

Festival fireworks fly brightly across the sky

All temporary as ripples on the water
And forgotten just as readily

‘Til someone speaks of yesterday
