A sunny fall
afternoon spent in a field.
A deep deer path
follows the edge of the field’s tall growth.
I spy a tree trunk
rubbed free of bark.
I wonder where that
buck may be hiding right now, this being opening day of whitetail gun season.
The furry-tailed
squirrels aren’t talking, nor the chipmunk.
No, and thy will not talk. Why is it you see the bucks all the time then whe hunting season opens they vanish? So it goes around here but tomorrow is another day.....
ReplyDeleteHappy Hunting!
ReplyDeleteMethinks those whitetails know as soon as the jeeps and creeps arrive without a shot being fired.
ReplyDeleteI'm so rooting for the deer! I enjoyed watching a family that lives in my pasture all summer. :-)
ReplyDeleteha glad they did not rat him out....there are a few in my yard though...they know they are safe there...they sleep there at night...
ReplyDeleteI'm glad none of the forest animals are stool pigeons! It's opening weekend here too, so I'm leaving town (that's cause I don't actually live in town, I live out in the country where there's lots of shooting! I hope you have a safe opener Eric!
ReplyDeleteLots of gunshots around here yesterday. They sure know how to disappear.
ReplyDeleteIf it's anything like around here, the buck in in town chowing on someone's flower garden.
ReplyDeleteI'd hate to meet the bear, dogman, or Bigfoot that did that.
ReplyDeleteArm the deer as well, I say.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the forest will stay silent and the buck will live to rub another year! :) A wonderful moment to stand and witness his footprint on the world...
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to post a pic of your trophy buck!
ReplyDeleteand BE CAREFUL!
Loved your outdoorsy 55 Eric
Thanks for playing, thanks for helping me out today, and have a Kick Ass Week-End
Oh I hope the buck got away!
ReplyDeleteAw, I so hope the buck knows all about hiding, the whens and the wheres....and that he survives hunting season. This was very touching, Eric.
ReplyDeleteAnd will that tree survive, with so much bark removed? :)
ReplyDeleteEveryone seems to be "blending in!" and silence is the rule in hunting season- I do worry about those who get wounded not killed...
ReplyDeleteBut it's never the hunters, is it, Izzy? Mores the pity. Still, we can always hope that when they've shot the last buck they'll start on each other.
ReplyDeleteJust so everyone knows, I was not out hunting. It was my lunch hour and I was just out taking pictures. Never saw a deer, just signs, and all I could have done was snap a photo. (Not even hunt-able property)
ReplyDeleteneither am i, shhhhhhhh. nice one!
ReplyDeleteBe safe. Happy Hunting. Lovely 55, Eric!
ReplyDeleteMine is here
Have you a TRULY BLESSED SUNDAY and a WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING!!!
hugs

Nature takes care of its own. I've often seen animals take up for each other, most recently some songbirds on my street were dive-bombing a hawk that was trying to catch a squirrel. The squirrel got away. :-)
ReplyDeleteI hate hunting season as I'm always afraid to go out riding my horse. I just can't believe all those hunters are careful, let alone good shots. It is very scary.
