We’re All Cannibals

A drink of water
A pat on the head
Safely seeded
Into the soft bed

Safe in the darkness
Snug under covers
Soon to grow big like
Their fathers and mothers

Stretch and reaching
While they’re asleep
With miles to go and
Promises to keep

Then, sudden pulling
Uprooted from beds
Roughly skinned naked
And off with their heads

Sliced or dismembered
Sautéed or raw
Death yields nutrition
Food for us all
