Welcome to Rock 'n Roll Fridays!
We are like other memes in that we will ask you thirteen questions each and every Friday.
But our little "twist" is that each week we will pick a singer, band, era or category and pick thirteen of their lyrics. Each of our questions will be based on the lyrics. Got it? Great! Let's begin this week's meme!
Today we picked Smashing Pumpkins. (The song titles and the lyrics are in bold)Here's Rock 'n Roll Fridays!
“Shakedown 1979, Cool kids never have the time. On a live wire right up off the street, You and I should meet”.
Where were you in 1979?
In 1979 I was 15, in 9th grade, and lived in Southfield, Michigan. (Boring enough?)
“And if they steal your life, your heart is still mine. Your song, you sing, a truth, there’s no other. I want to believe in you dear.”
What song do you love to sing along with?
“Overkill” by Colin Hay... but I sing along to a LOT of songs!
3. BULLET WITH BUTTERFLY WINGS
“Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage. Someone will say what is lost can never be saved. Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage”.
When was the last time you felt like a rat in a cage?
I’m not really sure what that means, impotent rage? In that case, yesterday at work!
“I remember dreaming, Wishing, Hoping, Praying for this day. Now I sit and watch them, the little ones I love”.
What day are you dreaming, wishing, hoping, praying for?
The day I win the lottery, although I’m not praying for it. In more realistic terms, I dream of the day I'll finally break 200 in bowling. I’ve come close (197) but I’ve never quite reached it.
“I used to be a little boy, so old in my shoes. And what I choose is my voice. What’s a boy supposed to do?”
What did you bring to SHOW n TELL as a child to school?
I can’t even remember having Show & Tell at school, but it was a LONG time ago. I probably brought my latest ‘cool’ toy.
6. THIRTY THREE
“Supper’s waiting on the table. Tomorrow’s just an excuse away. So I pull my collar up and face the cold, on my own. The Earth laughs beneath my heavy feet.”
When and where do you generally eat supper?
Weekdays we eat dinner right when I get home from work just after 6 p.m.
I sit in my recliner and watch a little TV - then we'll usually go for a walk, go shopping or something after dinner. (So I'm not a total couch potato)
“To cleanse these regrets, my angel wings were bruised and restrained. My belly stings.
When was the last time your belly “stung”?
When I finished off the last of my chili, which was made with jalapeño and habañero peppers from my garden – spicy stuff!
(I rarely have worry-related stomach pain)
8. TONIGHT TONIGHT
“Time is never time at all, you can never ever leave, without leaving a piece of youth. And our lives are forever changed. We will never be the same. The more you change the less you feel.”
Despite the number, what age do you think you really are?
I have to say I’m right where I belong: 45. Of course, that’s an average; mentally I often act 15, but physically I sometimes feel about 75.
9. APPLES AND ORANGES
“What if the sun refused to shine? What if the clouds refused to rain? What if the wind refused to blow? What if the seas refused to wave? What if the world refused it’s turn?”
Do you believe the 2012 catastrophe will happen? If so, how are you preparing for it?
No, I don’t believe a bunch of ancient Mayans (or Aztecs or anybody else) had some great insight into the future. (If they did, they're probably still be around!) They just made a nifty perpetual calendar by being observant and being pretty good at math. Remember 1984? 1999? 2000? 2001? All prophesized as being some kind of Doomsday. None of those were right either.
“Stay with me, I’ll set you free. ‘Cause I can tell you once were pretty. Rose, so sad you’ve lost your petals. Lost the luster off your tattle tales.”
What celebrity has not aged well?
Robert Redford. Come on now, Bobby... you’ve got plenty of cash to tighten that face up at least a little bit!
(Wrinkles only add character when they’re not your dominant feature)
“Who am I to you? Along the way, I lost my faith. And as you were, you’ll be again. To mold like clay, to break like dirt. To tear me up in your sympathy.”
What was the last thing you made out of dirt or clay?
It was a pinch-pot that I made in sculpture class in high school. But I’d like to take a pottery class and learn to use a potter’s wheel to spin plates and bowl and such.
“Is it any wonder I found peace through you? Turn to the gates of heaven, to myself be damned. Turn away from eye, it’s not enough, just a touch.”
How do you find peace?
Take a right-turn off Selfishness, go down three blocks until you get to Self-Awareness. Head right down Self-Awareness until you get to Pride. (But if you reach Vanity you’ve gone too far) Just left of Pride you find Self-Sacrifice. Head down that until you finally reach Compassion. At Compassion, go right and you’ll find Peace.
(Just don't forget to take that left turn at Abuquerque!)
13. MA BELLE
“You must hold your truce alone. To make love happen, the moon must send you home. There’s no place that I’d rather be”.
When was the last time you walked in the moonlight?
I was out in the moonlight just last week, taking pictures of the full moon. I didn’t walk around much though, since I had my tripod. (In fact, I mostly sat in a chair) I took about 100 pictures and I’ll be posting a few of them in my Photo Blog once I have a chance to go through them all.
